Intermittent fasting has taken off in Silicon Valley (Qz.com, 2017) and several tech company bigwigs are spearheading the trend. Phil Libin (CEO of AI studio), Daniel Gross (Partner at Y Combinator), and Loïc Le Meur (Executive V.P. at Six Apart) all believe in the benefits of fasting and they have managed to popularize the practice in their field. Monthly meetups take place in Silicon Valley, in addition to online groups, where fasters exchange knowledge on fasting. For example, the website WeFa.st argues that fasting can actually lead to a more productive day.
Phil Libin former Evernote CEO describes fasting as “transformative”. He stated the following “There’s a mild euphoria. I’m in a much better mood, my focus is better, and there’s a constant supply of energy. I just feel a lot healthier. It’s helping me be a better CEO”. (theguardian, 2017) Proponents point to several indicators of the practice’s potential. Dr. Michael Klaper claims that water fasts can lead to “profound improvements” in high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, asthma, and migraines.
Dr. Klaper also addressed the fear that many have of going without food for extended periods of time. “After supervising hundreds of fasts, many lasting 2-3 weeks, and some up to 30 or 40 days, I can report the happy news that the reality is nothing like the feared image people hold about fasting.” He goes on to explain that for the first 24 to 48 hours of a water fast the body simply burns of “blood sugar and sugar stored in the muscles and liver in the form of glycogen.” The real fast begins in about 2-3 days when the body begins burning fat tissue for fuel. At this point molecules known as ketones enter the blood’s circulation. Ketones actually suppress hunger and Dr. Klaper claims by day five the feeling of hunger is replaced with “a feeling of great well-being.”According to Dr. Klapper, one of the greatest benefits of fasting is the tongues taste buds are retuned and “Whole, natural foods begin to taste really delicious again.”
It seems that doctors have some strong words of support for the techie’s latest trend. It should be noted that one should definitely consult with their doctor before considering fasting techniques.
